The high quality of the presentations that we have at the iMoot is what keeps both presenters and attendees coming back year after year. If you are new to presenting at an iMoot - don't worry, you'll get help and guidance from the team to make sure everything runs smoothly.

To submit a presentation proposal please select the 'Add Entry' tab below. We'll do the rest, and get back to you to confirm whether it has been accepted.

Sessions for the iMoot are to be a maximum of 45 minutes long including question time.

If you can not see the 'Add Entry' tab, either you haven't set up an account on the site, or the call for presentations has closed.

Formative assessment using Moodle Quiz

Content Type: Online Teaching and Course Creation

Language: English

Description of Presentation

You've probably heard about formative assessment (assessment FOR learning) and summative assessment (assessment OF learning). The Quiz tool in Moodle is often used for the latter, for example, a test at the end of a course. But it can also be used for formative assessment.

In this talk, I'll discuss my experience setting up weekly quizzes in a Moodle course to help learners check whether they have understood the material.

First, I'll explain why a "check your understanding" quiz with multiple-choice questions is a practical method of implementing formative assessment in an online course. Then, I'll go over the settings I have used to set up these quizzes: number of attempts allowed, passing score, grading method, question order, question behaviour, quiz review options, and overall feedback with grade boundaries. Finally, I'll show the feedback I've got from learners about the usefulness of the quizzes and discuss ways to improve the design and administration of quizzes for formative assessment.
